An interview with Éric Dereumaux, the Director of Galerie RX, based in Paris, France.

What is a common theme in your program?
Identity.
Who is the artist in your program that you have worked with the longest? How did that relationship begin?
Lee Bae, a Korean artist who lives in France. When I was a student, I visited his studio with my professor. 10 years later I invited him for his first solo show at the gallery.

Who was the last artist who’s studio you visited? Tell us a bit about the work.
Joël Andrianomearisoa, one of my artists represented. To talk about the huge project Africa 2020, a French presidential event.
What qualities do you look for in an artist?
They must surprise me.
Name an artist you don't represent that are particularly drawn to and why.
Günter Uecker for his radicalism.
Tell us about why you decided to open a gallery.
The desire to reach anyone by art.
What is your personal or professional motto?

Why are you passionate about art?
The art helps me to find the trail of my life.
How have you grown as a dealer over the years?
I've grown up because of the artists I support.
How have you grown as a curator over the years?
I achieved a better selection through a particular subject: The national identity.
Tell us about a mentor you had early on in your career and what they taught you.
Sadly I've never got the chance to meet my mentor, André Malraux.
Name a big overall lesson you've learned in running a gallery.
Patience is a key.
What are you busy working on right now?
I am selling an artwork.
What does success as a gallery director mean to you?
The freedom to choice the artist you like to work with.
What is the best piece of business advice you were given when you first started out?
Perseverance is an important element of success.
At what point in your life did you first learn about the art industry? What called you to it?
When I launched my web magazine online.
What is your favorite thing about your gallery space?
The quality of art presentation.
Name a person in the art industry that you admire or look up to and why.
Thaddaeus Ropac
What does the art world need more? Less of?
More sincerity and less opportunism.
What is the most important quality you look for in a patron of the gallery and your artists?
Involvement and transparency.
Tell us about one artwork you love living with and why.
A Lee Bae's painting which brings me everyday serenity and vitality.
What do you think is the greatest challenge galleries face today? How are you addressing this?
Working with others galleries as a partnership.
How can galleries collectively advance?
Through common and regular events.
