Joey Lico is an independent curator and the Global Curator & Sr. Director for The Cultivist. Currently based in Los Angeles, Joey has worked with a variety of institutions from The White House to the New York Foundation for the Arts as an advocate for emerging artists. During her 10+ year career she has furthered discourse around her passion and commitment towards decolonizing research methodologies as related to the canon of art history.

CESAR KASTRO presented by Flower Shop Collective
"I love how Kastro takes a step towards reclaiming the narratives and addresses all that was stolen from our people. I remember seeing the Containers performance in 2016 and it resonated -- her use of textiles and patterns wrapped around the female body challenges constructions of identity, multicultural social spaces, and hierarchies." “Every time I see a work by Saya Woolfalk I feel as though I've transcended into another time and place. The world of the Empathics she has created--a fictional race of women who are able to alter their genetic make-up and fuse with plants--evokes a utopian possibility. With the baseline feeling (these days) that the world is crumbling around us, this work gives me a genuine hope for the future.” JL

“This work asks a lot of questions to the viewer. With this assemblage Quiñones pokes holes in our biases, which are undeniably complicated by a history of slavery and racism in the United States.” JL

“I've long enjoyed the empathy and humor in Zsako's drawings, so I loved seeing an entire booth of his work. He has a visual language that is seeped with mythical meanings. Following the way he interconnects and entwines the figures, objects and characters throughout the work unfolds like a story.” JL

“I would be doing a disservice to anyone reading this if I didn't select a work by Yik Yung. She is one of Korea’s most well respected ceramic artists and a true pioneer in the artform. The white porcelain is influenced by Joseon baekja -- which I understand are prized for their simplicity and naturalness. They are made using the ancient throwing technique, which offers flexibility and efficiency, allowing Yik Yung to produce works that lack artificial traits and remain true to the material.” JL
